Information about applying for an American university and studying in the United States
1. When should I start the application process?
You should start the application process as early as possible, preferably at least 12 months before the planned starting date of your studies. This gives an athlete the best chances for an athletic scholarship. The athlete has two opportunities to go: the first is in the fall of the year of graduation from high school, and the other in the following fall, year later. Your eligibility to compete is rarely granted if more than 15 months have passed since graduation but it is not impossible. We can discuss about these opportunities in more detail. If you have repeated a class or spent an extra year in high school you should get in touch with us asap, since the eligibility requirements could be different.
2. Are the degrees equivalent internationally?
As long as the degree is received from the university that has national creditation, the degree will be applicable in most parts of the world. Euro Athlete only offers the athlete information to the coaches of such institutions. Corporations also value foreign degrees, as it gives the company more value with employees. Understanding different cultures is important for companies, and a different academic background is considered valuable.
3. How will I arrange my accommodation in the USA?
A student-athlete won't have to worry about finding an apartment, as coaches will handle this before arrival in the USA. During the first year, accommodation is usually in the campus area, after this many will move to off-campus with their friends. If the university pays for accommodation, it will usually be in the campus area, but this can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.
4. What does the service fee include?
We will recommend you to university coaches with whom we have collaborated for a long time. This means that they know us and have learned to trust our service. Coaches also constantly contact our office and ask for information about new prospective athletes. We will advise the athlete in everything related to the application process. We provide information about language tests, applying to universities, insurances, flights and the student visa. If needed, we will also give you more detailed information about the universities from both the academic and the athletic point of view.
5. Is it possible to go for only one year, or do I have to finish my degree to get an athletic scholarship?
Yes, it is possible to go for just one year. Coaches usually want student-athletes who finish their degrees, but staying for only one year does not prevent you to obtain a scholarship. If you leave the university after the first year, you will not have to pay back your scholarship.
6. Are there big differences between universities?
There are approximately 4,000 universities and colleges in the USA. Naturally there are differences between universities both athletically and academically. Because of this it is important to have several options instead of focusing on just one that you have heard about from someone or read online. Euro Athlete will help you with all this by comparing universities based on the student-athlete's goals and skills.
